Can't Miss This: Liquid Layout

So I've been working on designing the VOX iPad issue for this week. It has required an unbelievable amount of patience, but I have enjoyed it. What I found most difficult was designing everything twice -- in landscape and portrait -- but that also might be my most favorite part of it. It was definitely a challenge, but I liked the challenge.

So I found this post on my blog that I've been following, magculture.com/blog, about "Liquid Layout." Below is a video they had on the post:

I found it particularly interesting because it is all what I have been spending my last couple days doing: transferring a print issue into an iPad production.

They also included a link about how magazines are keeping up with the times and technology, especially with all types of tablets coming out, like the Kindle Fire, and not just the iPad.

  1. Oh wow. So that was actually a very cool demo. I had seen someone post this on Facebook and thought about watching it. As soon as it popped up on your blog as well, I knew I had to. I don't think I would have appreciated that video as much as I do post magazine design class. I'm sure I'll appreciate it even more after I take my turn at the Vox Issue app next week.

It was very cool to see how that one file adapted and shifted on the iPad AND the Motorola tablet. It would be amazing if designers could create tablet designs once and have them transfer to multiple devices. With the current situation, designing can become somewhat of a pain. The fun is sucked out of the design when you're not really rethinking the design and reworking ideas, but instead just reformatting everything.
