These past 2 weeks, I've been working on designing the feature for Vox. This feature was a little more difficult because it wasn't one long story, so I couldn't do running text throughout all 8 pages. The topic of the stories is "Vignettes" but it was difficult for the editors, writers and me to think of a catchy title. There are 7 different stories, so I struggled a little bit with making them all cohesive, yet different enough that it wouldn't bore the reader. Below is my 2nd draft that I'm presenting tomorrow, still changes to be made.
Something else that's been somewhat difficult was the overall theme of the package. Right now it's "Social Circles" but we had a brainstorming session in the Vox meeting to think of a different theme. We've thrown out the words: hobbies, communities, friendships, sharing interest, just to name a few.
This will be running next Thursday, I'll be sure to post the final version then!
I think your redesign is fabulous! You really took everyone's comments into consideration and made it work for you as a designer. It definitely feels more consistent and polished. And your type choice is great. It's not stuffy, but not too outrageous so it can work as the headline to all the stories. I also like that you kept it B&W because it lets the great color in the photos pop more. I wasn't really sure what this piece was about and it honestly seemed kind of hodge podge and unfinished, but this layout actually makes me want to read the stories which is what we're supposed to be doing. Major kudos, hope the editors feel the same! :)
ReplyDeleteYour second draft turned out really well. There is a strong sense of cohesiveness between the pages that was kind of muddled before. I really love your photo treatment and the way you frame/overlap some of the photos. It adds a sense of charm to the design. It's definitely hard when we're working with j-school photographers and can't do much to the pictures, but you handled that obstacle well.
